Promoting brain health in older adults
– Exploring the BrainWalk
Original challenge: How can we support older adults in developing and sustaining lifestyle practices that promote brain health and reduce the risk of cognitive decline, informed by insights from the FINGER model and the FINGER study?
Challenge from: Kungsholmen City District
Redefined challenge: How might we spark interest, knowledge, motivation and empower older adults to take and sustain action towards healthy lifestyle choices?
Solution: BrainWalk (HjärnSteg)
Concept: An interactive walk through nature, with engaging stations along the way. At each station, you’ll learn about healthy lifestyle habits, answer quiz questions, and take part in a small challenge or exercise. The experience is designed to inspire you to take steps toward a healthier lifestyle while also creating opportunities for social connection.

Report abstract
This project addresses the challenge of promoting brain health among older adults in Kungsholmen, Stockholm, in collaboration with the local city district administration. Grounded in the FINGER model, which emphasizes physical activity, nutrition, cognitive stimulation, social engagement and cardio vascular health controls, the project initially focused on improving access to health information.
Using design thinking, the team conducted research to analyze and understand the needs of the target group. The main barrier is the difficulty turning knowledge into sustained action. Socialisolation, loss of routine after retirement, psychological wellbeing, and accessibility were key factors.
Five concepts were developed and evaluated. The final concept, BrainWalk/Hjärnsteg, is an interactive outdoor walking route combining movement, knowledge, social interaction, sensory experiences, and playfulness. The report concludes that sustainable behaviour change requires accessible and meaningful social conditions, not information alone.
Project presentation video will be published shortly.
