New PhD course – Bridging Science and Societal Needs
Openlab is launching our new PhD course to be held this autumn! The course – Bridging Science and Societal Needs – focuses on design thinking methodology as support for innovation and development in science and society.
For several years Openlab has been giving a master’s course where students from our four partner universities (Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Södertörn University, Karolinska Institutet and Stockholm University) are introduced to design thinking methodology. Using design thinking the students collaborate to develop solutions to societal challenges formulated by the City och Stockholm, Region Stockholm and the County Administrative Board.
Based on this successful concept, providing practical training for students from different academic fields and innovative solutions to the public sector partners, the Openlab working group has identified needs and opportunities for developing and providing a corresponding course for doctoral students.
This autumn Openlab launches the brand new PhD course Bridging Science and Societal Needs. The course will create conditions for doctoral students to connect and collaborate across disciplines and research fields. It entails a problem oriented teaching a learning style, where students are provided with a pedagogy that enables them to take active responsibility for individual and group learning. One aim of the course is to support the participants in developing knowledge, skill sets and approaches valuable in their doctoral studies, and create new pathways for science to impact complex societal challenges and meet societal needs.
The interdisciplinary 4.,5 credit course is open for all PhD students from Openlab’s four partner universities – Karolinska Institutet, Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Södertörn University and Stockholm University.
For the time being the course is established at Karolinska Institutet and Stockholm University, and the process of establishing it at the other universities is underway. Professors and lecturers from the different universities will be coaching the PhD students in the course.
