Digistem+
Original challenge: How might we get more young men with a non-european background to 1) become aware of Tobiasregistret 2) register as stem cell donors?
Challenge from: Tobiasregistret
Redefined challenge: How might we make more young men aware of the existence of Tobias Registret and motivate them to sign up as potential donors?
Solution: Digistem+
Concept: DIGISTEM+ is a dual-purpose digital platform designed to support both stem cell donors and volunteers. For donors, it offers a personalised portal with insights into their HLA profile, rarity, and match potential, making the donation process more meaningful and transparent. For volunteers, it provides training, certification, and communication tools to empower outreach and community engagement.

Report abstract
This report outlines the design thinking process used to address an enrollment issue in Tobiasregistret, Sweden’s national stem cell registry. Despite the goal of reflecting Sweden’s diversity, patients with non-European backgrounds have more difficulty finding suitable donors, compared to patients of European origin. There is a clear gender imbalance, as men, who are the most successful donors, are still underrepresented in the registry. Increasing the number of male donors is important, as they often have a higher stem cell yield and lower risk of immune complications, especially in unrelated matches. This report describes the steps taken to understand the problem, starting with interviews and surveys with stakeholders to identify key challenges. The insights gathered led to a reformulated problem statement that formed the basis for the creation of five prototype themes. Different prototype concepts were developed, tested and presented to stakeholders. Future work will focus on further developing these ideas to deliver practical solutions.
Team BAXX-OO was created at OpenLab and became our choice of name for the team. We started as six team members and sat down to discuss how to come up with a meaningful but inspiring name. The name was inspired by the South Korean concept of blood group personalities. As we continued to look at our personalities, we started by sharing our blood types, and that is where the name BAXX-OO was born. It consists of our blood types, with XX symbolizing the two members who did not know their blood type. We thought this would be part of our team building and include us all in the team name. Because it also had a deep meaning in the Korean language “bagsu” (박수) means “clap”. The name not only symbolizes us as a team, it also invigorates us to keep doing what we do!
