Challenge: Create a functional solution that will attract people to use more sustainable forms of transportation, especially Public transport by allowing for the testing of services that adress the issue faced by citizens, making their everyday lives more easier and comfortable. Challenge Giver: Region Stockholm, Public Transport authority (SL), Business development Redefined challenge: 1) How might we create an attractive solution that can improve the wellbeing of residents and provide the sense of autonomy, comfort and safe and ease of access that privately owned cars provide. 2) How might we create a physical hub design that would be attractive to users in rural/suburbans areas and is responsive to their needs, while also ensuring enough spatial-flexibility for SL to test various services and supplemental features. Solution: The Hub Network. Concept: By combine different mobility hubs concept into a big network the Hub network could be the solution for the difficult local mobility and for the first and last mile in the journey. The expansion possibilities are also endless and the improper parking of E-scooters could be eliminated. This report presents the challenge, process, and results for the Mobile Mobility Hub Network, a transport innovation challenge given by Storstockholms Lokaltrafik’s (SL) department of Business Development which we worked on throughout the spring semester of 2021. Using Design Thinking, a creative problem solving methodology, we took a user-centered approach to the challenge and relied on a heavily iterative process to reach our final result.
Mobile Mobility Hub Network, our final concept, is aimed at both reducing unnecessary travel and filling existing gaps in local travel services within and around suburban areas, by offering non-transport as well as mobility related services, such as foldable bikes and electric scooters, through a network of small modular moveable hubs of different sizes according to the needs of particular locations. This primary focus is a solution to the first and last mile problems faced by many in these areas.
