Sustainable ageing in Stockholm

Original challenge: How might we create senior residences with age-friendly environments & good mobility solutions that encourage physical activity, social interactions & well-being?
Challenge from: Äldreförvaltningen & Micasa
Redefined challenge: How can we enable less care-dependent seniors to be socially & physically active and increase their sense of belonging in society without interfering with their sense of independence & dignity?
Solution: Little Wishes
Concept: Little Wishes is a platform that can be accessed through a digital screen, the Little Wishes website, by calling the hotline, or with a QR code that leads to the website. Its main role is to display information about activities, places or events that people in the building are planning to attend to and would like to have a neighbour join them. The activities can be grouped into categories such as sport, nature, culture, or food.

Report abstract

This report is the result of a six-month-long design thinking process, aiming to find solutions for sustainable ageing in Stockholm. Public clients Äldreförvaltningen and Micasa Fastigheterpresented us with the challenge of creating mobility solutions for an age-friendly environment, encouraging physical activity, social interaction, and well-being. Early on in our research, we realized that although mobility solutions were important, close social connections were a more crucial component for keeping people active as they age. We wanted to look beyond senior residences and into society at large with the prospect of enabling people to reconnect with their local communities and stay active and healthy. This could allow the elderly to remain in their own homes for longer. We landed on the concept of Little Wishes-an interactive digital screen within or near people’s homes encouraging neighbours—young and old—to participate in activities organized by locals and groups. It would be managed by a small staff of local ambassadors doing outreach.
